Why We Sometimes Say No to Projects

At Pinnacle Heat Pumps, we don’t take the job unless we are confident we can actually solve the problem. That means being honest with homeowners about what their home needs, even when the answer is more involved than expected, and occasionally stepping back from jobs when we know the conditions aren’t right for a good outcome.

This approach is worth explaining.

We Only Install Work We Can Stand Behind

Our reputation is built on results. When a homeowner calls us a year after we upgraded their home and tells us their house is more comfortable, performs better, and delivers the savings they hoped for, that’s a win for our team. So when we’re not confident that the outcome is achievable, it is our duty to say so.

You can count on us to be honest. A system or solution that’s installed in the wrong conditions will underperform, and when it does, the homeowner is the one who pays for it: in comfort, in energy bills, and in frustration. We’d rather have that conversation up front than leave a customer disappointed with work that had our name on it.

The Most Common Example: Heat Pumps and the Building Envelope

The situation we run into most often involves heat pump installation in a home with a poorly insulated or leaky building envelope.

A heat pump is one of the best ways to heat and cool a home, and in SW Colorado, it can also get you off propane for good. But its performance depends on the home it’s installed in. A house that’s losing conditioned air through gaps in the attic, rim joists, and walls is working against the system from the start. The heat pump runs longer, works harder, and still can’t keep up with the steady loss of conditioned air. The homeowner ends up with a high-quality, all-electric system delivering mediocre results, and no clear explanation for why.

In those situations, we’ll be direct: the building envelope needs attention before a new system will perform the way you’re expecting. That might mean insulation, air sealing, or both. The scope depends on the home.

Some homeowners understand and will want to address it immediately. Others have a budget or a timeline that makes the full picture feel out of reach right now. We understand that, and we try to work with each homeowner to find a path forward that makes sense.

But when a homeowner wants only the heat pump and isn’t open to addressing what we know will limit its performance, we’ll sometimes make the call to step back. It’s not the outcome we’re hoping for, but we know they won’t be happy with the results, and we won’t be either.

We’ll Never Leave You Without Options

Saying no to a project doesn’t mean leaving a homeowner without a next step. If the work that needs to happen first falls outside what we do, we’ll point you toward contractors in SW Colorado we trust to do it well. Our goal is for you to get the right outcome for your home, even if we’re not the ones doing every part of it.

This Approach Isn’t Right for Every Homeowner

We know that. Contractors like us aren’t likely to be the lowest bid. What we’re trying to be is the contractor you call when you want the job done right the first time and the results to last.

If that’s what you’re looking for, we’d be glad to start with an honest conversation about what your home actually needs.
